Eve from Paradise Lost

John Milton’s 17th-century poem Paradise Lost tells, in part, the biblical story of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the garden of Eden. Gustave Doré (1832–83), born in Strasbourg, France, was a prolific and highly successful literary illustrator. He illustrated Milton’s masterpiece for Cassel & Co., a British publisher, in 1866. Here, Doré shows us the moment when Adam welcomes Eve, his new companion created from his own rib by God. Eve is presented as a graceful, innocent helpmate to Adam.
