Nimshi (Nim´shi)

The grandfather of Jehu, king of Israel (i.e., the Northern Kingdom). Although Nimshi seems in some places to be designated as the father of Jehu (“Jehu son of Nimshi,” 1Kgs 19:16; 2Kgs 9:20), the word “son” is most likely used more broadly in these passages to mean “descendant.”

1Kgs 19:16

16Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place.

2Kgs 9:20

20Again the sentinel reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. It looks like the driving of Jehu son of Nimshi; for he drives like a maniac.”
