Nile (Nil)

The great river of Egypt flowing north from its sources in Lake Victoria in Uganda to the Mediterranean, a distance of 4,037 miles, the entire length of the Sudan and Egypt. There are many biblical references to the Nile and its impressive flooding, unlike any rivers of Palestine (Jer 46:7-8; Amos 8:8). Punishment of Egypt might mean that God would dry up the Nile (Isa 19:5), and the ultimate arrogance of the Pharaoh was his claim “my Nile is my own; I made it” (Ezek 29:3). In the time preceding the exodus, Pharaoh commanded that every Hebrew male child be cast into the Nile (Exod 1:22), though Moses was providentially rescued by being placed in a basket of bulrushes (Exod 2). The signs and wonders wrought by Moses included turning Nile water into blood (Exod 4:9; Exod 7:14-22).
