The festival celebrated on the first day of the month of Tishri (September/October), the seventh month of the Jewish calendar. Basic regulations for the observance of the New Year Festival appear in (Lev 23:23-25 and Num 29:1-6). Since Tishri is not actually the first month of the year, it seems likely that the biblical New Year Festival was originally a harvest celebration associated with the Day of Atonement (Lev 23:26-32; Num 29:7-11) and the Festival of Tabernacles (Booths).
