Nethanel (Ni-than´uhl; sometimes Netha-neel; Heb., “God gives”)

1 The son of Zuar (Num 1:8) and commander of 54,400 men (Num 2:5, Num 10:15) who took part in the dedication of the altar of the tabernacle (Num 7:18-23). 2 The fourth son of Jesse, and a brother of David (1Chr 2:14). 3 A priest who was to blow the trumpets before the Ark (1Chr 15:24). 4 A prince of Judah sent by King Jehoshaphat (ca. 874–850 BCE) to instruct all the cities of Judah in the “book of the law of the Lord” (2Chr 17:7-9). 5 A Levite, the father of Shemaiah (1Chr 24:6). 6 A Levite, the son of Obed-edom, a gatekeeper in the Temple (1Chr 26:4). 7 One of the Levites who contributed to the Passover offering in the time of Josiah (late seventh century BCE). 8 The son of Pashhur, and a priest who married a foreign wife while in exile (Ezra 10:22; 1Esd 9:22). 9 The head of the priestly house of Jedaiah in the days of the high priest Joiakim (late sixth–early fifth century BCE). 10 A priest who took part in the dedication of the rebuilt wall of Jerusalem (Neh 12:36).
